What It Takes to Reupholster a Sofa
What do you think? Did you know a sofa that's new emits an eye-watering 90kg CO2 in the production process all by itself? If this sounds like a lot, that's because it is. In actual it's like burning through close to 10 gallon of diesel!
There are plenty of eco-friendly alternatives to buying an entirely new sofa. One of them is having old furniture to be reupholstered. If you choose to reupholster your sofa it not only decreases your carbon footprint but can also keep furniture you love from being destroyed.
If you own an old sofa that needs some new life then here is information about how we reupholster furniture.
Step 1: Inspection
The first step is to look over the parts that are visible on the furniture, including the arms, backrest, sides, interiors, and cushions to determine what needs to be replaced. We also inspect the concealed spaces, such as the ones under the seat cushions as they are also susceptible to wear and tear.
While we work our way around your sofa We check the filling of the cushions; if they feel too saggy, then we pick the highest-quality sofa cushion to replace them in the future in the future.
Next, we remove the upholstery layers until they are able to be reattached to their frames. This allows us the opportunity to examine each layer in turn and discern what can be reused as well as what has to be replaced, etc.
When we are putting the frame down We look for old staples, old tacks and studs which are used to hold the frame in place. After they've been removed, we will remove this cover. During this stage, we pay special attention to the frame and ensure that it doesn't get damaged at any point in the disassembly process.
When the pieces are taken apart, we check the quality of the padding and studding If the padding is damaged, or if the frame needs attention, we replace or repair them. To make sure the foundation is in good shape for springing, any joints that are loose are put in place to tighten up or put back together.
Step 2: Springing
A comfortable sofa is built with strong but supple springs. That's why this is one of the most crucial phases of the reupholstery process.
To ensure a comfortable sofa and ensure a comfortable sofa, worn or damaged springs will be replaced during reupholstery as well as those deemed adequate are aligned and fitted to the frame.
When you're looking to add more springs on the sofa there are four spring types to choose from such as double cone, tension, zig-zag with mesh upper spring units. Look below to find out how each is fitted.
How to install double cone springs
Double cone springs are typically placed in-between webbing and base hessian. The size and gauge they can be used for seats and backs. The ones with the thinnest and smallest cones can be used to help support arm pads.
The springs are attached to the frame, webbing and any other springs by lashing. To seal the base - and for security reasons - they are covered in hessian.
How to set up tension and zig-zag springs?
The majority of them are used to construct modern furniture pieces, tension/zigzag springs take less effort to put in that double cone. If double cones have to be secured to different areas that are part of the base tension/zigzags can be fixed to the frame using only hooks. Simply insert the zig-zags into the frame to secure the base.
How to connect springs with mesh tops
A very popular option for commercial furniture mesh top spring units use one cone spring to be riveted to the base of the laths, which are made of steel. Then, they are kept upright by wire meshes with more wire on the edges. It is then covered in Hessian.
Step 3: Webbing
Webbing your frame the next step. To do this, we check the foundation , where cushions are normally set (if you've ever purchased outdoor furniture, webbing can be seen as bands of plastic or rubber that are stretched across frames).
We then make sure the webbing is flexible and strong enough to give suspension to the person sitting. We can also replace or add any springs, stuffing, padding or deep buttoning, for greater comfort and to enhance the overall look of your furniture.
Step 4: Attaching
After all the fabric has been measured and cut, we place the top cover over your furniture. To do this, we lay the fabric on top of the armrest, then smooth it until the seams line up. Then, we tuck the ends so that they're tucked into the armrest and tie them together in straight lines.
Following this we cut off any seat pads which need to be remolded. With the measurements that we made at the beginning, we cut the cushion's shape using foam, then cover it with padding and stuffing.
The rest of sections, paying particular attention to the tautness of seat cushions since these are the most prone to slide in the course of time. This allows us to put the entire piece back together. Once this has been completed and your sofa is reupholstered, we'll send the sofa back to you so that you can enjoy it for many years to come.

Please note, as we have years of experience in the process of reupholstering furniture, we would not suggest doing it at home. The process is complex and requires a trained sector sponsor to ensure an elegant, durable look.
